Welcome at the homepage of the Clericus chess program and its WinBoard incarnation (Hopeless Chess). It is a free, downloadable software playing at about 2100-2150 Elo strength.

Since I'm not a professional programmer, Clericus is no speed demon - in fact it sucks in terms of nodes per second, trying to make up for this handicap with a speculative, asymmetric evaluation function. For that reason its playing style is a cameleon-like. Sometimes it is capable of playing a decent positional game, restraining the opponent from move one; in other games I have seen it getting a hopeless position and launching a devastating counterattack. In other cases it just fails miserably, but that's another story.

So get it and have fun, for You don't know how it will play this time!

The former engine of Clericus, Hopeless 0.47 (effectively 3 versions ago), played in the 15th edition of WBEC, division 5, scoring rather unimpressive 11,5 out of 25. After a good start it had a dreadful finish with a series of unsound sacrifices. It seems that material values are out of sync. Games can be vieved here.
